Objectives

In this course, you learn midwifery care during complicated childbirth.
The course provides the skills to assist and manage complicated childbirth safely for the woman and the fetus as well as take care of the newborn baby. In the course, you will learn to identify the complications of childbirth and start the necessary immediate care.

After completing the course student
• knows the midwifery care during complicated childbirth
• knows the maneuvers in breech presentation
• knows the maneuvers to resolve shoulder dystocia
• is able to protect sexual- and reproductive health in complicated childbirth
• knows how to resuscitate the newborn baby

Content

• midwifery care in complicated childbirth
• midwifery care in breech presentation and shoulder dystocia
• care of the newborn who needs specialized care and neonatal resuscitation
• treatment of perineal trauma

Prerequisites

The student must have completed Midwifery Care During Childbirth and clinical training 11 Midwifery Care During Childbirth.

Assessment criteria, pass/fail

Pass
The student
• knows the midwifery care during complicated childbirth and is able to apply evidence-based midwifery to actions
• knows the right maneuvers in breech presentation and shoulder dystocia, and is able to combine knowlegde to actions or when reasoning actions
• knows how to protect and promote sexual and reproductive health in complicated childbirth
• knows the theory of newborn resuscitation and knows how to initiate newborn resuscitation and act as a member of a multiprofessional team
• participates actively in lessons
• takes responsibility for own performance in a committed manner

Fail
Student
• knows the basics of midwifery care during complicated childbirth, but is unable to apply evidence-based midwifery to actions
• knows the basics of breech presentation and resolving shoulder dystocia, but does not know how to act in such emergency midwifery situations
• does not know the meaning of supporting sexual and reproductive health in complicated childbirth
• knows the theory of newborn resuscitation, but does not know how to work and communicate in a multiprofessional team
