Objectives

In this course, you learn midwifery care during childbirth.
The course provides the skills to promote the physiological process of labour and birth. After the course you are able to manage the birth safely for the woman and the fetus. In the course, you will learn to detect complications of childbirth and to evaluate and start the necessary immediate treatment.

After completing the course student
• knows the physiology of childbirth
• knows the midwifery care during normal childbirth
• is able to use technology in childbirth
• knows the midwifery care in complicated childbirth
• knows how to care the newborn immediately after birth
• knows how to resuscitate newborn baby
• knows how to protect sexual and reproductive health intrapartum
• knows how to support the development of positive birth experience and support early interaction

• screening and assessing maternal and fetal wellbeing
• midwifery care in normal childbirth

• care of the newborn immediately after birth
• care of the newborn who needs specialized care and neonatal resuscitation

Prerequisites

The student must have completed the nursing studies except the Bachelor’s Thesis. The student cannot participate until Supervised clinical training 1-7 and all theoretical and clinical nursing studies are completed. 

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

Student
• knows the basic physiology of childbirth, but is unable to apply midwifery knowledge
• knows the principles of midwifery care in normal childbirth
• is able to use technology in childbirth, but is unable to combine information in actions or describing actions
• knows superficially the midwifery care in complicated childbirth
• knows the principles how to resuscitate the newborn, but is unable to reason choices or actions
• has a narrow understanding how to support a positive birth experience
• knows how to protect sexual and reproductive health intrapartum

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

Student
• is able to define the physiology of childbirth
• knows the midwifery care in normal childbirth
• is able to use technology in childbirth, and is able to combine information in actions or describing actions
• knows the midwifery care in complicated childbirth
• knows how to resuscitate the newborn, and is unable to reason choices or actions
• knows how to support a positive birth experience
• knows how to protect sexual and reproductive health intrapartum

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Student
• has pervasive knowledge of the physiology of childbirth
• knows the midwifery care in normal childbirth
• is able to use technology in childbirth, and is able to combine reliably information in actions or describing actions
• knows the midwifery care in complicated childbirth and has an understanding of midwives role in multiprofessional team
• knows how to resuscitate the newborn, and is able reliably reason choices or actions
• knows how to support and promote a positive birth experience
• knows how to protect sexual and reproductive health intrapartum
