Objectives

In the course, you will learn about antenatal and intrapartum midwifery care.
The course equips participants with the skills to provide support, promote well-being, and offer guidance during the pre-pregnancy and pregnancy periods, ensuring a healthy and safe pregnancy.

After completing this course, student
• knows extensively the content of pre-pregnancy guidance
• has the knowledge of pregnancy and its physiology and hormonal processes
• has the knowledge of evidence-based midwifery care for pregnancy planning and confirmation, as well as prenatal care, including the screening methods for normal pregnancies
• has the knowledge of prenatal care for fetal and maternal wellbeing and the detection of abnormalities
• knows how to support the positive pregnancy experience for the family
• is able to plan the prenatal classes
• has the knowledge of the principles of supporting the growth process and life changes in the transition to parenthood

Content

• pre-pregnancy health promotion
• supporting the normal course and physiological process of pregnancy
• assessing and promoting the well-being of the fetus and the mother
• guidance of pregnant woman and her family
• family allowances and maternal care services
• prenatal screening and guidance
• prenatal classes
• medication during low-risk pregnancy
• parenting support

Prerequisites

The student must have completed the nursing studies except the Bachelor’s Thesis. The student cannot participate until Supervised clinical training 1-7 and all theoretical and clinical nursing studies are completed.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student
• knows the content of pre-pregnancy guidance
• knows the normal course of pregnancy and its physiological and hormonal processes
• is aware of midwifery practice related to pre-pregnancy care, confirmation of pregnancy and follow-up of normal pregnancy
• knows how to assess and promote the well-being of the fetus and pregnant woman and identify complications
• is able to support positive pregnancy experience
• is able to plan prenatal classes
• knows the principles of growing into parenthood and supporting life changes

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

The student
• knows the content of pre-pregnancy guidance
• knows the normal course of pregnancy and its physiological and hormonal processes
• is able to compound midwifery practice to pre-pregnancy care, confirmation of pregnancy and follow-up of normal pregnancy
• is able to assess and promote the well-being of the fetus and pregnant woman and identify complications
• is able to support positive pregnancy experience
• is able to plan and implement prenatal classes
• knows the principles of growing into parenthood and supporting life changes

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student
• knows the content of pre-pregnancy guidance extensively
• knows the normal course of pregnancy and its physiological and hormonal processes
• masters midwifery practice related to pre-pregnancy care, confirmation of pregnancy and follow-up of normal pregnancy
• is able to assess and promote the well-being of the fetus and pregnant woman and identify complications
• is able to support positive pregnancy experience and understands its significance for early interaction
• is able to plan and implement family centerd prenatal classes
• masters the principles of growing into parenthood and supporting life changes
