Objectives

This study module extensively strengthens and develops professional competences of general nursing in clinical training in nursing care.

After completing the course, the student
· Knows how to act professionally, ethically, and in a patient/client-centered way in nursing care.
· Knows how to communicate and act multi-professionally, utilizing information technology.
· Knows how to document and implement patient/client safety in nursing care.
· Understands the significance of self management and professional co- operation skills of the employee, development, as well as quality management in nursing care.
· Understands the social and healthcare service system as part of patient care.
· Knows how to promote health of the patient/client.
· Works actively in guiding and teaching the patient while supporting self-care.
· Can carry out clinical nursing care.
· Knows how to implement evidence-based care and utilize research in decision-making.

Content

Orientation to supervised clinical training and supervised clinical training in holistic nursing care.

Prerequisites

The student has completed Supervised Clinical Trainings 1-3 and participated in Supervised Clinical Training 4. Participated in nursing theory studies related to the clinical training area.

Assessment criteria, pass/fail

Pass: The student
· Complies with nursing care legislation, ethical guidelines and principles, acts responsibly in the work team, and complies with the clinical training guidelines.
· Is able to evaluate and develop their own competences, knows their own competences and limits.
· Values the client/patient as an expert and active participant in their own life, engaging with them respectfully and collaboratively.
· Becomes proficient in providing individualized care to vulnerable client groups and patients from diverse cultural backgrounds, ensuring culturally sensitive and tailored nursing care support.
· Is capable in fostering professional, therapeutic relationships with clients/patients and their diverse families, offering adept psychosocial support across various ages and backgrounds.
· Knows how to act with good work community skills.
· Knows how to use the nursing care process in documentation and utilize it in nursing care, as well as assess the timeliness, consistency and quality of the documentation.
· Knows how to use digital nursing systems safely.
· Knows how to advance patient safety and proactively prevent adverse events throughout every phase of the patient care continuum.
· Knows how to prioritize their work tasks and manage their own actions.
· Can realistically assess their own nursing care competences and development and can give and receive feedback, acts economically and in accordance with the principles of sustainable development.
· Executes exceptional nursing care, ensuring patient satisfaction in their care experience.
· Gains experience as a primary nurse, overseeing patient care pathways, discharge protocols, and post-care follow-up planning.
· Identifies the health risk factors of their clients/patients and knows how to direct early support and guide them as needed.
· Capably addresses patient needs within a multi-professional team, contributing to tailored care by planning, executing, and evaluating individualized health-promoting strategies in a client-centered approach.
· Can assess the patient's needs, resources and own responsibility when planning guidance and self-care and can use patient-centered teaching and guidance methods and evaluate the results.
· Knows the principles of infection prevention and aseptic practice.
· Knows how to perform basic care.
· Masters the knowledge and skills of essential procedures in nursing care.
· Acquires skills in evaluating and monitoring vital signs and patient status, making informed decisions, and taking appropriate action based on assessments.
· Knows how to carry out medication care and fluid therapy safely under supervision.
· Proficiently searches and applies scientific, evidence-based information, learning resources, and unit-specific care guidelines to ensure informed and effective patient care.

Fail: The student
· Does not comply with nursing legislation, ethical guidelines or principles, acts irresponsibly in the work team or does not follow clinical training instructions or acts fraudulently (e.g. Missing personal objectives or work shifts, does not follow working hours, does not report absences as agreed or the number of hours in the training is not met).
· Does not take responsibility of their own learning.
· Is unable to evaluate and develop their own competences.
· Does not recognize their own competences or the limits of their competences.
· Does not value the client/patient or meet with them as an expert and actor in their own life.
· Does not become proficient in providing individualized care to vulnerable client groups or patients from diverse cultural backgrounds, not able to ensure culturally sensitive and tailored nursing care support.
· Is not capable of fostering professional, therapeutic relationships with clients/patients or their diverse families, not being able to offer adept psychosocial support across various ages and backgrounds.
· Does not know how to act with good work community skills.
· Does not know how to use the nursing care process in documentation or utilize it in nursing care, nor assess the timeliness, consistency and quality of the documentation.
· Does not know how to use digital nursing care systems safely.
· Does not know how to advance patient safety or proactively prevent adverse events throughout every phase of the patient care continuum.
· Does not know how to prioritize their work tasks or manage their own actions.
· Does not know how to realistically assess their own nursing care competences or development nor how to give and receive feedback.
· Does not operate economically or in accordance with the principles of sustainable development.
· Does not execute exceptional nursing care to ensure patient satisfaction in their care experience.
· Does not gain experience as a primary nurse, overseeing patient care pathways, discharge protocols, or post-care follow-up planning.
· Does not identify the health risk factors of their clients/patients or how to direct early support or guide them as needed.
· Cannot address patient needs within a multi-professional team, not contributing to tailored care by planning, executing, and evaluating individualized health-promoting strategies in a client-centered approach.
· Cannot assess the patient's needs, resources or own responsibility when planning guidance and self-care does not use patient-centered teaching and guidance methods or evaluate the results.
· Does not know the principles of infection prevention or use aseptic practice.
· Cannot perform basic care.
· Fails to perform essential procedures in nursing care under supervision.
· Fails to acquire skills in evaluating and monitoring vital signs and patient status, not able to make informed decisions, and take appropriate action based on assessments.
· Repeatedly makes mistakes in medication care and fluid therapy despite supervision and has not completed the medication passport assignment.
· Fails to search and apply scientific, evidence-based information, learning resources or unit-specific care guidelines to ensure informed and effective patient care.

Further information

When selecting supervised clinical placements for nursing education clinical placements 2-9, consideration should be given to the broad and diverse placement of clinical placements in various areas of nursing practice, in accordance with EU directives. Supervised clinical placements should be conducted with patients of different ages in primary healthcare, specialized healthcare, inpatient wards, and outpatient healthcare, ensuring the development of competence in somatic, mental health, and substance abuse nursing. Supervised clinical placements may be in public or private healthcare or the third sector.
