Objectives
The Studentis
- able to assess woman’s physical and behavioural responses to labour
- is able to provide information, support, and encouragement to woman and her support person throughout childbirth
- is able to provide respectful one-to-one midwifery care
- is able to perform the normal childbirth
- is able to plan and implement the care of normal childbirth and justifies the made decisions
- is able to identify the differences between low- and high-risk childbirth and is able to observe the need to refer to high-risk care and is capable to adjust interventions appropriately
- is able to observe the changes and complications in wellbeing and status of the woman in labour and after birth, the fetus and newborn baby
- is able to regognize complications in physiology of childbirth and act according to protocol
- is able to assist and act in the complicated childbirth as an active member of multi-professional team
- gets experience of supporting the physiology of childbirth and is able to promote positive birth experience
- develops the expertise of midwifery during childbirth
Content
6 weeks supervised clinical training in delivery rooms
Prerequisites
Participation in Supervised Clinical Training, Midwifery During Childbirth I and II
Two of the three supervised clinical trainings of Midwifery during Childbirth should be done at the university hospital
Assessment criteria, pass/fail
Passed
The student
is able to implement holistic midwifery care safely and responsibly under supervision in both normal and complicated childbirth
is able to prevent and observe the changes and complications in wellbeing of woman in labour and and after birth, the fetus and newborn baby
Is able to utilize different follow up methods appropriatley throughout the childbirth and justify her/his desicions
Has the knowledge of midwifery care during childbirth, recognizes the gaps in knowledge and pursues to strengthen her/his own evidence-based knowledge
Provides respectful one-to-one midwifery care
- Is able to notice the wishes of woman in labour
- is able to perform and interpret appropriate interventions and examinations of the woman and fetus
- is able, under supervision, to perform normal childbirth
- meets her/his client and her birthing companion and work group members professionally
- follows the confidentiality and data protection guidelines
- is working as an active member of a multi-professional team
- follows the agreed rules of the supervised clinical training
- evaluates her/his own competence and development of the expertise in midwifery during childbirth realistically and is able to give and receive feedback
Failed
- The student is not able to plan, implement and assess the care of the women in labour, there are shortcomings in knowledge of midwifery care during childbirth
- is not able to observe responsibly the maternal and fetal wellbeing during childbirth and at fourth phase with the adequate
- methods, is neither able to anticipate or recognize changes in these and does not report these
- meets her/his client, her birthing companion and work group members unprofessionally
- does not recognize the boundaries of his/her expertise
- is endangering patient safety
- violates confidentiality or patient privacy
- fails to follow the agreed rules for supervised clinical training
- evaluates her/his own competence of midwifery care during childbirth unrealistically and is unable to receive feedback
