Objectives

The student
- is able to implement knowledge of postnatal changes to midwifery care
- is able to observe the postnatal changes in woman, recognize the abnormalities and knows their treatment
- knows how to observe the newborn baby, recognize the abnormalities and knows their treatment
- is able to support the early interaction, parenthood and family wellbeing
- knows how to do the family planning counselling and to support sexual and reproductive health

Content

- postnatal recovery
- guidance and support of maternal self-care
- breastfeeding counselling training
- basic care and observation of the newborn baby
- early interaction and parenthood
- postnatal abnormalities and their treatment
- family planning and sexual and reproductive health
- maternal postnatal observation

Prerequisites

The student must have completed 135 credits of nursing studies including Anatomy and Physiology and courses of Perioperative Nursing, Maternity Care and Gynaecological Nursing. Supervised clinical training could not be started before completing all theoretical and clinical nursing studies.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student
- knows the maternal postnatal changes
- knows how to observe and treat the newborn baby and the methods used in the family guidance
- knows the principles and methods of postnatal observation and the abnormalities
- knows the methods used in the support of early interaction, parenthood and family wellbeing
- knows the principles of the family planning counselling and the sexual and reproductive health support
- has the theoretical knowledge of breastfeeding

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

- knows the methods of early interaction, parenthood and family wellbeing support
- knows how to treat the healthy newborn babies and newborn babies needing special monitoring and is able to implement the knowledge of that in theory
- knows maternal postnatal care also in cases with special needs and disorders and is able to apply the knowledge of that in theory
- knows the methods of family planning counselling and the support of sexual and reproductive health
- has the theoretical knowledge of breastfeeding

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student
- knows the methods of early interaction, parenthood and family wellbeing support and knows extensively the significance of these
- knows how to treat the healthy newborns and newborns needing special monitoring and is able to implement the knowledge of that extensively in theory
- knows the maternal postnatal care also in cases with special needs and disorders and is able to implement the knowledge of that extensively in theory
- knows the methods of family planning, sexual and reproductive health support and guidance in theory by combining knowledge of several disciplines
- is able to implement the theoretical knowledge of breastfeeding
