Objectives
The student
- is able to implement the antenatal midwifery care in delivery rooms
- implements the customer oriented midwifery care during labour
- is able to observe the changes and complications in wellbeing and status of the woman in labour/after birth and foetus / newborn baby
- is able, under supervision, to take of the woman in labour and perform the normal vaginal birth
- is able to observe and take of the woman and newborn baby wellbeing after birth
- gets experience to support the physiology of labour and to support the positive birth experience
- develops the expertise of midwifery during childbirth
Content
- normal vaginal birth
- labour progression assessment
- observations to assess maternal wellbeing during labour
- pain relief, medication and fluid therapy
- assessment of foetal wellbeing based on clinical signs and with technology
- perineal support, episiotomy cutting and suturing, suturing of perineal tears
- observations to assess maternal wellbeing after birth
- observations to assess wellbeing of a newborn baby and care of a newborn baby
- 4 weeks supervised clinical training in delivery rooms
Prerequisites
Participation in courses on Midwifery Care during Childbirth, Orientation to Clinical Training,
Midwifery Care during Childbirth and Orientation to Clinical Training, Midwifwry during abnormal Childbirth.
Two of the three supervised clinical trainings of Midwifery during Childbirth should be done at the university level hospital.
Assessment criteria, pass/fail
Passed
The student
- is able to implement the holistic midwifery care safely and responsibly
- is able to observe the changes in wellbeing of woman in labour and foetus / woman at postnatal phase and newborn baby, and is working as the active member of multi-professional team
- is able to perform the maternal and foetal observation methods
- has the basic knowledge of midwifery care during childbirth, recognizes gap of knowledge and seeks to improve evidence based knowledge of midwifery
- is able, under supervision, to perform vaginal birth in the customer oriented way and safely
- meets the woman in labour and her support person and work group members professionally
- guides the woman in labour and her family in the customer oriented way
- follows the confidentiality and data protection guidelines
- follows in his / her actions the agreed rules of the supervised practical training
- evaluates her/his own competence and development of the expertise in midwifery during childbirth realistically and is able to give and receive feedback
Failed
The student
- is not able to plan, implement and assess the care of the women in labour, there are wide shortcomings in knowledge of midwifery care during childbirth,
- is not able to observe responsibly the maternal and foetal wellbeing during labour and at postnatal phase with the adequate methods, is neither able to anticipate or recognize changes in these and does not report these ahead
- meets the pregnant woman, family and work group members unprofessionally
- does not recognize the boundaries of his/her expertise, is endangering patient safety
- violates confidentiality or patient privacy
- fails to follow the agreed rules for supervised practice
- evaluates her/his own competence of midwifery care during childbirth unrealistically and is unable to receive feedback
