Objectives

The aim of the course is to familiarise students with the specific issues of older people.

On completion of the course, the student will

• knows the importance of longevity for ageing people and society
• knows the changes in organ systems and tissues that occur with age and their links to degenerative diseases and functional capacity
• know how to promote health and functional capacity in older people
• knows the importance of exercise, nutrition and stimulants for the well-being and functional capacity of older people
• knowledge of the most common diseases affecting older people and their impact on functional capacity
• knows about the medical treatment of typical diseases in older people
• knows about services for older people and their contents in the social service system
• knowledge of the potential of assistive technology and assistive devices to support independent living in old age
• recognises the care and treatment needs of older people from a multidisciplinary perspective
• can use clinical reasoning to plan, implement and evaluate evidence-based physiotherapy for older people
• be able to reflect on their own practice

Content

• functional capacity of older people in the framework of the ICF (International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health)
• the most common diseases affecting older people
• accessibility, assistive technology and the assistive technology service process
• services for older people in the social service system
• elderly people with memory problems
• dying patients - hospice care
• evidence-based physiotherapy in exercise selection

Assessment criteria, pass/fail

Evaluation criteria, pass/fail:

A passed mark is the result when the student:

• can identify and define the most common diseases of older people and the main changes in functional capacity that come with ageing
• be able to identify, define and structure the changes in organ systems and tissues that occur with age
• be able to use and apply a range of approaches to increase physical activity and functional capacity in older people
• can work in a responsible, active and cooperative manner, taking account of other members of the group
• know the factors related to the ageing of the population and the life course of older people
• the importance of physical activity, nutrition and stimulants for the well-being and functional capacity of older people
• is aware of the most common diseases affecting older people
• participates in lessons, completes the tasks given in accordance with the instructions and returns them within the time limits set
