Objectives

On this course, the student learns the essential theoretical knowledge and skills needed for different types of laboratory tests and sample collection.

After completing the course, the student
• can guide clients and other health care professionals in preparing for sample collection
• can assess the significance and reliability of preanalytical factors at different stages of the sample collection process
• can reliably collect, handle, store and send various laboratory test samples and develop their skills as a sampler
• can take care of ergonomics, patient safety and occupational safety during the sample collection
• knows the recommendations and standards that guide sample collection activities and can act accordingly.

Content

• The need for laboratory testing
• Laboratory test requests and test abbreviations
• Preanalytical factors
• Guiding in preparation for laboratory tests
• Blood sampling using different methods
• Urine and stool sampling
• Throat swab sampling
• Gynecological cytology sampling
• Occupational and patient safety in sampling
• General principles of sample handling, storage and sending
• Standards, recommendations and guidelines for sampling

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student
• knows the main equipment and techniques needed for sampling
• can take the most routine clinical laboratory samples following the instructions
• knows the factors to consider in the further processing and sending of samples
• can assess the impact of the most important preanalytical factors in sampling and knows the main points of the laboratory process
• can describe the aspects to consider in patient/client guidance
• knows the most important recommendations and standards for sampling and strives to apply them
• can receive feedback, take responsibility for their own performance and work in a group

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

The student
• can take high-quality clinical laboratory samples safely and reliably in common sampling situations
• take care of the further processing and preservation of the samples during the sending
• can assess the impact of preanalytical factors in sampling and knows the different stages of the process
• understands preanalytical phenomena and the principles of guidance and can apply the knowledge to guide customers in matters related to sampling
• can apply and compare recommendations and standards that guide preanalytics and sampling and develop their practices
• can evaluate their own actions and take responsibility for their own performance and group activities

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student
• can take high-quality laboratory samples safely and reliably in more challenging situations
• takes care of the correct further processing and sending of the samples and can justify their actions
• can analyze and evaluate the impact of preanalytical factors in sampling and in different stages of the laboratory process
• is able to provide guidance related to different laboratory tests and to take preanalytical factors into consideration
• can analyze and apply recommendations and standards that guide preanalytics and sampling
• can work constructively, flexibly and committedly in cooperation
