Objectives

The core objective of the course is for the student to understand the importance of proficiency in the Swedish language, interaction, and communication as part of professional competence and
to be aware of their role as a communicator in the field of Health Care and Biomedical Laboratory Science.

After completion of the course the student:
• is able to inquire about key information relevant to sample collection during patient interviews
• instructs various patients in sample collection situations and other examinations
• communicates orally in Swedish in tasks typical of a biomedical laboratory scientist
• is capable of further developing their language skills in their specialized field using various learning tools
• achieves the oral proficiency in the second domestic language required by the legislation of the University of Applied Sciences in tasks relevant to their field of study (Civil Service Language Proficiency Certificates, Common European Framework of Reference for Languages level B1 = satisfactory knowledge -> grades 1-3, B2 = good knowledge -> grades 4-5).

Prerequisites

Level: Upper Secondary School studies or equivalent skills Common European Framework for Languages Level B1.
Take the Swedish entry level test and, if necessary, complete the preparatory studies before the course begins.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student:
• can mostly explain their education and training understandably and briefly
• can provide simple oral instructions to clients during instruction situations
• can ask simple questions in interview situations, but understanding the responses may be challenging
• uses the basic vocabulary of biomedical laboratory science adequately
• uses simple grammatical structure
• communicates understandably in simple, routine interaction situations.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

The student:
• can clearly explain their education and training
• can provide the main instructions to clients during instruction situations.
• can ask clarifying questions in sample collection situations and respond to unforeseen questions
• utilizes the key vocabulary and concepts of biomedical laboratory science
• mostly uses grammatical structures correctly
• communicates adequately clearly in situations typical of the workplace
• understands and can apply what they have read.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student:
• can fluently and comprehensively discuss their education and training
• can communicate smoothly in client instruction situations
• can ask follow-up questions requiring more extensive answers in sample collection situations and respond to common questions without major difficulties
• uses vocabulary and concepts of biomedical laboratory science fluently
• utilizes grammatical structures smoothly
• communicates skillfully even in demanding interaction situations
• can apply and explain what they have read.
