Objectives

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the laboratory testing process in other clinical specialties of biomedical laboratory science (e.g., clinical microbiology, pathology, molecular biology, immunology, and genetics).

After completion of the course the student:
• can handle various samples and assess their suitability for analysis
• analyses samples and performs laboratory tests according to quality requirements
• understand the principles of the methods and equipment used
• conducts various laboratory tests under supervision and comprehends the clinical significance of the results
• applies theoretical knowledge in different stages of the laboratory process
• actively participates in laboratory tasks and collaborates as a team member in various workstations while adhering to workplace regulations
• considers occupational safety, ergonomics, and ethical aspects in their work
• evaluates their professional development.

• Laboratory process in the specialty
• Clinical microbiology/pathology/molecular biology, etc. studies, methods, and equipment
• Laboratory information systems
• Quality management
• Occupational and patient safety
• The role of the laboratory within the healthcare system
• Multi professional collaboration and teamwork skills

Prerequisites

Before the clinical training begins, students are expected to have sufficient theoretical knowledge in the respective specialty.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

Pass: The student can apply their theoretical knowledge while participating in various tasks during the clinical training. The student can perform laboratory tests both using analyzers and, if necessary, manually under supervision. The student can assess the reliability of the results and consider the need for possible further actions. The student actively participates in the training as a responsible member of the work community. The student can evaluate their own professional development during the training period.

Fail: The student does not meet the criteria for a passing grade.
