Objectives
The core objective of the course is that the student learns the basics of immunology and the immune system of the human body as well as its most common defects.
After completion of the course the student:
• names and locates the central organs and structures of the immune system and explain their functions
• names the cells of the immune system and explains their functions in immune defense
• describes the structure of antibodies and explains the principle of the antigen-antibody reaction
• can explain the principles and main mechanisms of human natural and acquired immunity
• defines and describes the most common defects in the immune system
• can explain the principle of vaccination and understand organ and tissue transplantation from an immunological point of view
Content
• Lymphatic organs and tissues and their function
• Cells of the immune system and their function
• The structure of antibodies and the formation of immune complexes
• Natural and acquired immunity, factors involved and operating principles
• Basics of immunopathology
• Vaccination and organ and tissue transplantation from an immunological point of view
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)
The student can list the central organs of the immune system. The student can explain what is meant by human innate and acquired immunity, and knows their function at a basic level. The student can list the cell types of the immune system, and knows the basics of their operation. The student knows the basic structure of antibodies and the principle of the antigen-antibody reaction. The student can name situations or diseases in which the function of the immune system is disturbed.
