Objectives

The core objective of the course is for the student to comprehend the significance of Swedish language proficiency, communication, and communication as integral components of professional competence, as well as to acknowledge their role as communicators in healthcare and biomedical laboratory science situations involving patients.

After completion of the course the student:
• is able to provide written instructions in Swedish to various clients in sample collection situations and related procedures
• communicates in writing in Swedish in typical tasks for biomedical laboratory scientist
• is able to utilize Swedish-language texts and articles related to biomedical laboratory science
• is capable of developing their language skills in their specialized field using various learning tools
• achieves the written proficiency in the second domestic language required by the university legislation of the University of Applied Sciences in tasks relevant to their field of study (Civil Service Language Proficiency Certificates, Common European Framework of Reference for Languages level B1 = satisfactory knowledge -> grades 1-3, B2 = good knowledge -> grades 4-5).

Prerequisites

Level: Upper Secondary School studies or equivalent skills Common European Framework for Languages Level B1.
Take the Swedish entry level test and, if necessary, complete the preparatory studies before the course begins.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student:
• can communicate mainly understandably and briefly about their education and training
• is able to provide simple written instructions in customer guidance situations
• uses the basic vocabulary of biomedical laboratory science with some assistance
• uses simple grammatical structures
• communicates understandably in simple, routine interaction situations
• understands, using a dictionary if necessary, the main points of easy-to-read professional publications related to their own tasks in the field of biomedical laboratory science.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

The student:
• can communicate clearly about their education and training
• is able to provide key written instructions in customer guidance situations
• uses the essential vocabulary and concepts of biomedical laboratory science
• uses grammatical structures mostly correctly
• communicates sufficiently clearly in typical work situations
• understands the main points and most details of biomedical laboratory science texts without aids
• can search for and utilize key professional publications related to their work.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student:
• can write fluently and extensively about their education and training
• uses the vocabulary and concepts of biomedical laboratory science fluently
• uses grammatical structures fluently
• can communicate fluently in customer instruction situations
• communicates skillfully even in demanding interaction situations
• understands both the main points and the details of text from the field of biomedical laboratory science
• can search for, utilize, and apply relatively demanding professional publications related to their work.
