Objectives

The aim of the course is to familiarise you with the most common diseases in internal medicine and oncology specialities.

After completing the course, the student
• understands the epidemiology of the most common internal medicine and oncological diseases, including the incidence and prevalence of new cases.
• understands the genetic background of the most common internal medicine and oncological diseases and recognize the impact of genomic information on disease management
• is able to share information on the risk factors of the most common internal medicine and oncological diseases and guide in their prevention.
• recognizes the symptoms of the most common internal medicine and oncological diseases.
• understands the clinical, radiological, and clinical-physiological investigations of the most common internal medicine and oncological diseases.
• is able to interpret the findings of conducted investigations in relation to the stage of the disease.
• understands the treatment modalities of the most common internal medicine and oncological diseases, the consequences of treatment, and be able to identify deviations in the patient's condition.
• knows the follow-up, monitoring, and prognosis of the most common internal medicine and oncological diseases
• knows the key concepts and vocabulary of the course in Finnish
• can participate in patient guidance situations related to the course in Finnish according to their language proficiency level

• the main internal medicine and oncological diseases with their genetics, symptoms, investigations, and findings, as well as the basics of treatment and follow-up
• key terminology and vocabulary of the course in Finnish

Assessment criteria, pass/fail

Pass:
The student
• knows the prevalence, risk factors, and causes of common internal medicine and oncological diseases.
• identifies the symptoms of common internal diseases and the related pathophysiology, can name common investigations for internal medicine diseases and explain their findings.
• knows the treatment modalities and monitoring of common internal medicine and oncological diseases.
• understands the effects of genetic factors on the treatment of common internal medicine and oncological diseases.
• understands the principles of cancer development, growth, and spread in relation to the general principles and treatment modalities of cancer therapy.

Fail:
The student
• is unaware of the prevalence, risk factors, or causes of common internal medicine and oncological diseases.
• cannot identify the symptoms of common internal medicine diseases or the related pathophysiology, and cannot name common investigations for internal medicine diseases or explain their findings.
• lacks knowledge of the treatment modalities or monitoring of common internal medicine and oncological diseases.
• does not understand the effects of genetic factors on the treatment of common internal and oncological diseases.
• is unfamiliar with the principles of cancer development, growth, and spread in relation to the general principles and treatment modalities of cancer therapy.
