Objectives

In the course, you will learn about different management systems and management practices used in forestry organizations.

After completing the course, the student:
• is familiar with the most common ways in which forest organizations are managed (including information and process management).
• knows the standards for operation and environmental systems, the general structure of these systems, and understands their significance in guiding organizational operations.
• knows labor legislation and the key collective agreements in the forestry sector and understands their significance when acting as a supervisor.

Content

Fundamentals of information and process management, SFS standards guiding organizational operations, the general structure and use of forest certification systems, operation and environmental systems in the forestry sector, Chain of Custody (CoC) management, corporate responsibility, labor legislation, forestry sector collective agreements, examples of organizational structures and operational control practices in forest organizations.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student:
- knows the general structure of operation and environmental systems and the associated standards.
- knows the basics of the most commonly used management theories in the forestry sector.
- is aware of the general impacts of labor legislation on the work of forestry professionals.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

The student:
- knows the general structure of operation and environmental systems, the associated standards, and understands their significance in the operations of forestry organizations.
- knows the basics of the most commonly used management theories in the forestry sector and understands their impact on organizational operations.
- is aware of the general impacts of labor legislation on the work of forestry professionals and working as a supervisor.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student:
- knows the general structure of operation and environmental systems, the associated standards, and understands their impact on forestry operations.
- demonstrates knowledge of the ways in which forest organizations are managed and understands the differences in operations between different organizations.
- is aware of the general impacts of labor legislation on the work of forestry professionals and working as a supervisor, and can take these into account in his/her work.
