Objectives

In the course, you get to know the information systems in use in forest organizations and their structure and requirements.

After completing the course, the student:
• understands the connection between operations and information systems, as well as the general requirements that forest organizations impose on information systems.
• is aware of the general information system development in the forest sector (e.g., open forest and nature data and their use).
• understands the structure of relational databases and the role of spatial information in the overall information system.
• possesses basic skills to participate in the planning and development projects of information systems.

Content

General structure of information systems, data warehouses, and development of information systems, the significance of spatial information in forestry information systems, examples of organizational information systems. Exercise of combining spatial and relational data.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student:
- knows the general structure of information systems and the role of data warehouses.
- understands the connection between operations and information systems, identifying reasons why information systems differ between organizations.
- knows where to find open forest and nature data.
- can create an information system application utilizing spatial information.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

The student:
- knows the general structure of information systems and how information is stored and updated in data warehouses
- understands the structure of relational databases and demonstrates it in the created information system application he/she makes
- understands the connection between operations and information systems, grasping how organizational operations affect the requirements placed on information systems
- knows where to access open forest and nature data and can effectively utilize this information
- is aware of the general information system development in the forest sector

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student:
- understands how information is stored and processed through information systems, and how data moves between systems of different actors
- demonstrates knowledge of the general system development in the forest sector and identifies potential areas for improvement
- can retrieve open forest and nature data from various sources and integrate them into an information system
- shows the ability to effectively utilize forestry information systems and participate in planning and development projects for information systems
