Objectives
The student:
- is able to identify forest and main mire types and soil types in field
- can visually interpret aerial images and also use a map for orienteering in the forest
-knows how the the conditions of forest sites affect the growth of trees and silvicultural decisions
- knows the native tree species grown in Finland and is familiar with their essential ecological requirements.
Content
Interpretation of aerial images, forming forest compartments, identification of forest types and undrained and drained mire types, using indicator species, using digital maps, determining soil types in the field, factors affecting tree growth, the ecological requirement of different tree species
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)
Recognizes common forest and peatland forest types and knows the basics of soil classification.
Can make tree-based observations of aerial photography and use the terrain map to navigate in the forest.
Knows the essential site conditions of the forest.
Knows the main domestic tree species.
Assessment criteria, good (3-4)
In addition to the above mentioned, the student is pble determine the types of soil in the terrain and use vegetation as an aid in determining forest types
Can visually interpret the aerial photographs and use the terrain map to navigate with it
Knows how the habitat conditions affect tree growth and identifies domestic tree species and knows their essential ecological requirements.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
In addition to the above mentioned:
The students Is able to justify forest and peatland site type identification and patterning solutions with vegetation, stand characteristics and soil properties
Knows how to use field observations and theoretical knowledge to analyze tree growth conditions and justify forest management solutions.
Can identify domestic tree species also in winter time
