Objectives

Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:

• Describe the operation of common heating and ventilation processes.
• Define the field devices necessary for the operation of the process.
• Document the automation of heating and ventilation processes.
• Explain the basic characteristics of dynamic processes (gain, time constant, delay) and their significance for control.
• Understand the operating principles of a PI controller.
• Describe the process of conducting a step response test for a process and its role in tuning the controller.

Prerequisites

Building Automation as Part of Building Services -course.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student can describe the significance of the building automation system in its main features as part of building technology and identify the devices used in the building automation system.
The student can also interpret documents related to the system.
Additionally, the student can create a simple control diagram for a building's technical process..

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

The student can create a control diagram and operation description for a typical HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) process.
The student can describe the structure and devices required for the building automation system for this process.
The student is able to generate documents related to the building automation system following design guidelines.
Furthermore, the student understand the significance of process gain and time constant in the process.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student can apply the covered topics, considering the intended use of spaces and the goals set when defining process-related functions.
The student is capable of utilizing the opportunities provided by systems and applying them to achieve set objectives.
Additionally, the student can tune a PI controller.
