Upon completing the course, students will be able to:
• Describe various energy storage technologies and their operating principles
• Understand the role of electrical energy storage in balancing the power grid and enabling flexibility
• Analyze the interconnection between energy sectors and its significance in optimizing the energy system
• Model and evaluate the use of energy storage in supporting the power grid

Content

The course delves into electrical energy storage systems, such as battery technologies, supercapacitors, and electromechanical storage, and their applications in power system flexibility. The course covers the role of energy storage in frequency regulation, load leveling, and supporting the stability of the power system. It also examines sector integration, such as Power-to-X solutions, and their impact on optimizing the energy system. Students will analyze the technical and economic characteristics of various energy storage systems and their suitability for different applications.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student recognizes the key energy storage technologies and their basic characteristics, but the application and analysis remain superficial. The completion of tasks and exercises is partial, and the overall understanding is incomplete.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

The student masters electrical energy storage systems and their application in supporting the power grid. They can analyze the impacts of different solutions and examine the interconnection between energy sectors, but deeper evaluation and application may be somewhat incomplete.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student has a deep understanding of electrical energy storage and flexibility solutions, as well as their role in the power system. They are capable of independently analyzing the operation and integration of energy storage systems and applying their knowledge innovatively to practical problem-solving.
