Objectives

The students recognise the strength and transformation properties of wood. They know how the most common wood structures work and how they are measured for different forms of strain. The students learn the various wood structure joints.
The students gain an overview on what happens during the construction process of a steel frame building, starting from the building decision and ending with the handing over the finished building. The students understand how various structure options work and can brace the most common steel structures. The students know the steel products on the markets as well as the corrosion prevention and fire protection methods. The students are familiar with the stages of shop fabrication and structure installation.

Content

Content of wooden structures:
• Strength, deformation, etc. characteristics and design principles of wood and wood products.
• Dimensioning of beam and column
• Wood joints
• Sawn timber, plywood, glulam, CLT and wooden boards

Content of steel structures:
• Design basics of steel structures
• Stiffening of structures
• Connection types
• Surface treatment and fire protection methods
• Manufacturing and installation

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student knows wooden products and structures as well as regulations and instructions regarding wooden structures.
The student can design a simple wooden beam and wooden pillar.
The student knows steel products and structures as well as the regulations and instructions concerning them.
The student can design a simple steel beam and column.

The student knows wooden products and structures as well as regulations and instructions regarding wooden structures.
The student can design a simple wooden beam and wooden pillar.
