Strength of StructuresLaajuus (5 cr)

Code: 5B00FD50

Credits

5 op

Objectives

The students learn to understand the basics of strength of materials as well as the most important strength properties of wood and steel. They know the different stresses and the dependencies between strain, stress and transformations. The students understand how the cross-section, shape, size and material affect the stress and transformations. The students are able to calculate the strain of a straight rod for different forms of strain as well as to measure a buckling rod.

Content

The basic concepts of strength of materials, material properties, the drawing test for steel, Hooke’s law, elasticity theory and tension allowed. Magnitudes of cross-section geometry. Strain and transformation in different stress formats, measuring a rod for normal force, bending moment and shear force. Stability and buckling of a rod. Assignment.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

Students will be able to use the basics of the course and solve simple applications that are similar to the tasks being handled.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

In addition to the above, the student can apply the course units to different situations and can justify the solutions.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

In addition to the above, the student has a comprehensive understanding of the course topics and their use in problem solving, as well as the ability to present and justify logically selected solution methods.
