Objectives

Student understands the role of simulation and optimization in technical problems solving and design process for the mechanical engineering design processes. The student has ability in building the simulation and optimization models in application areas chosen from mechanical engineering e.g. virtual and augmented reality, structural and process optimization, generative design, 3D printing design and simulation. The student can use the advanced design methods and systems in the product development. Student also understands the possibilities of the advanced design methods and systems in creating cost and resource efficient solutions.

Content

Simulation and optimization applications in areas chosen from mechanical engineering e.g. virtual and augmented reality, structural and process optimization, generative design, 3D printing design and simulation.

Prerequisites

Basic know-how of:
• Machine design
• Dynamics and statics of rigid bodies
• Strength of materials
• 3D-modeling (CAE)

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student identifies the possibilities of the different design methods and systems in order to create the sustainable cost and resource efficient solutions. The student is aware of the requirements and possibilities of the design simulation and performs the given design tasks with assistance if necessary.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

The student knows the possibilities of the different design methods and systems in order to create the sustainable cost and resource efficient solutions. The student is aware of the requirements and possibilities of the design simulation and performs the given design tasks.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student is well versed in all the possibilities of the different design methods and systems and the most important basic concepts in order to create the sustainable cost and resource efficient solutions. The student is well aware of the requirements and possibilities of the design simulation and performs the given design tasks independently.
