Objectives

Students will be able to select and dimension key machine parts and transmissions for mechanical engineering and power transmission, such as shaft couplings and brakes, as well as chain and tooth belt transmissions. The student understands the connection options of machine parts and is able to dimension key joints of mechanical engineering and power transmission, such as rivet joints and shaft-hub joints (e.g. glue joint and spline) as well as shaft couplings (cluthes and compliant couplings). Knows the standard-based dimensioning methods and can form larger entities, such as engine-clutch-gear drives using components from manufacturers' catalogs. The student understands the basics of balancing, bearing installation/design and alignment of shaft couplings and is able to perform them.

Content

Selection and dimensioning of machine parts, transmissions and joints that require power transmission. Standard-based sizing. Axle couplings and brakes. Chain and Tooth Belt Transmissions. Rivet joints and shaft-hub joints (glue joint and splines) and axle couplings (cluthes and compliant couplings). Project work. Laboratory exercises.

Basic know-how of
- machine design,
- dynamics and statics of rigid bodies,
- strenght of materials

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student recognizes the key machine parts, joints and transmissions of machine building and power transfer, such as shaft couplings, rivet joints, chain and belt drives, and is able to dimension them in simple cases. The student is aware of the importance of standards in dimensioning and is able to select components to design larger entities such as motor-clutch-drive.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

The student is well acquainted with the key machine parts, joints and transmissions of machine design and power transmission, such as shaft couplings, rivet joints, chain and belt transmissions, and is able to independently dimension them in conventional cases. The student considers the correct standards in the dimensioning, and is able to form larger entities, e.g. engine-clutch-gear drive, from the selected components. Students are able to apply what they have learned to practical problems and take responsibility for their own performance.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student knows and understands extensively the key machine parts, joints and transmissions of machine building and power transfer, such as shaft couplings, rivet joints, chain and belt drives and can appliedly dimension them to demanding applications. The student is rightly aware of the right standards and the different solution options in the selection and can independently form larger entities such as the engine-clutch-gear drives, using the components of his choice. The student is able to find different ways of working and solutions, to justify his / her choices and to try new ways of operating. Students understand the economic and welfare benefits of their operations and also know how to anticipate them.
