Objectives

Student is able to choose and dimension the central machine elements of mechanical engineering.
The student knows both the basic and the most important special theories of strength calculation. He can apply these theories in strength calculations. He knows the laws describing the strength behavior of a solid part. He knows the fundamentals of the linear theory of elasticity and it's solution methods. He knows the basics of the theories of both thin and flat plates, membrane theory of shells and the energy principles of strength. Student is able proceed basic strain measurements and analyse the results.

Content

Choice and dimensioning of the demanding machine elements, transmissions and joints of the power transmission. Standard-based dimensioning of machine components. Special theories of strength of materials calculation, the fundamentals of the linear theory of elasticity and it's solution methods, the basics of the theories of both thin and flat plates, membrane theory of shells and the energy principles of strength. The strain gauge measurements and the analysis of them.

Prerequisites

Student knows basics of strength of materials analysis and statics of rigid bodies.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student recognizes the most important basic concepts and quantities of Lujuusopi. The student is aware of the basic concepts and laws governing the state of strength-based dimensioning and performs the given calculation tasks, if necessary assisted. The student understands the concept of stress element and can use it to calculate the main stresses and directions using software. The student understands the connection between tension and deformation.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

The student is familiar with the laws governing the behavioral behavior and is able to perform independently the given tasks. The student is able to identify and calculate significant strength grades and to dimension machine structures and parts. The student is able to assist in the design of the structural strength (strain gauge) measurements of the structures. The student knows the basic equations of strength studies and their solution methods. The student is able to apply ready-made solutions in special cases.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student is well-versed in all aspects of design strength and is able to apply his / her skills in the analysis of load-bearing structures and load calculations. The student is able to design measurements of the strength stiffness of the structures. The student masters the special theories of strength studies and can solve differential equations of basic cases independently. Students are able to apply special theories independently in future strength calculations.
