Objectives
The aim of the course is to prepare students for the process engineering design of factories. The course introduces the use of simulation tools to support process design, as well as safety aspects and economic calculations.
On completion of the course, the student will be able to
• explain the process of designing a process plant
• focusing on process design
• from concept to implementation.
• understand the principles of working in a plant design project
• be able to carry out process engineering dimensioning of common process equipment.
• is familiar with the use of process simulation software
• can also apply his/her knowledge to future tasks.
• is able to calculate the economics of a planned process.
Content
The process plant design process in the process industry, focusing on process design. Process safety aspects and costing. Process engineering sizing of the most common process industry equipment. Modelling of unit processes using ChemCad simulation software.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)
The student is able to define the stages of process design of a process engineering plant and knows the main equipment solutions used in the processes. The student is able to create simple process models and equipment designs and economic calculations comparable to the tasks covered in the course.
Assessment criteria, good (3-4)
The student can explain the process design steps of a process engineering plant and knows the equipment solutions used in the processes and can also compare equipment solutions. The student can build more sophisticated process models and equipment designs and perform economic calculations related to the processes.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
The student will have a comprehensive understanding of the process design stages of a process engineering plant. The student will be familiar with the equipment solutions used and be able to compare and evaluate different equipment options. The student will be able to formulate sophisticated process models and equipment designs and perform process-related economic calculations. The student will be able to search for different solution options and justify his/her choice.
