Objectives

The aim of the study course is to develop basic knowledge of different printing techniques and the requirements set by them.

After completing the course, the student:
• can describe the principles of different printing methods
• recognizes the stages of the printing process, from getting the product ready for printing, printing and post-processing of the printed product
• recognizes the requirements on the printing surface when printing with different printing methods and knows how to apply this knowledge to paper production
• can use the most common methods of visual assessment of print and the most common equipment for assessing the quality of print
• can analyze printing errors and can produce solutions to correct them.

Content

History and future of printing. Quality formation and measurement of the print. Offset printing, rotogravure printing, flexo, electrophotography and ink jet printing: products and demands for printing substrate in these printing methods. Printing inks. Post-processing of printed product.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student will be able to name printing methods and define their main requirements for paper and describe the main phases of the printing processes.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

Students will be able to explain the different printing methods and their main requirements on paper and understand the phases of the printing process.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Students will be able to analyse the print trace and the printing process and understand the requirements of paper in different printing processes. The student will be able to give instructions on how to modify the printing material to meet the requirements and avoid problems in printing.
