Objectives

The aim of the course is to provide the student with the basic knowledge of flow and flow equipment required in the process industry. Fluid mechanics knowledge is important in later studies and in jobs related to process engineering.

On completion of the course, the student will be able to
• explain the basic concepts and flow phenomena in fluid mechanics.
• know the equipment related to flow technology and their characteristics
• know how to perform process engineering dimensioning of pumps and pipes.

Content

Fluid properties and flow phenomena. Basic equations of fluid mechanics; mass balance, energy balance and modeling principles. Pipe flows and pressure drop in pipelines. Process engineering sizing of pumps. Design and operating characteristics of pumps, fans and compressors, piping and piping accessories. Valve characteristic curves.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student will be able to define the phenomena involved in flow technology and know the main equipment solutions used in the processes. The student will be able to solve simple sizing problems comparable to the tasks covered in the course.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

The student can explain the phenomena involved in flow technology and can compare equipment solutions used in processes. The student can apply his/her knowledge and performs more extensive and demanding dimensioning tasks than the basic tasks.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student will have a comprehensive understanding of flow technology. Students will be familiar with the equipment solutions used in flow technology and will be able to compare and evaluate different equipment options. Students will be able to solve challenging and applied problems. The student will be able to search for different solution options and justify his/her choice.
