Objectives

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to use Excel fluently and write a technical report.

After completing the course, the student will be able to:
• Incorporate figures and tables into a report according to the guidelines of the Written Reporting Guide.
• Reference illustrative elements appropriately.
• Describe the content of illustrative elements to the reader.
• Write a report using language and style that meet the requirements of the text genre.
• Cite sources and compile a bibliography.
• Illustrate statistical data using suitable charts.
• Use Excel for calculating basic statistical measures.
• Interpret data using charts and summary statistics.
• Calculate probabilities both theoretically and through computer simulations.
• Compute sample confidence intervals and utilize them, for example, in hypothesis testing.
• Understand the basics of regression and correlation.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

Students will understand the difference between a population and a sample. Students can calculate central, dispersion and location numbers from a sample. Students will be able to design simple experimental set-ups for statistical research and to visualise the results obtained both graphically and numerically. Understand the basics of distributions. The student will be able to write a report mainly according to the guidelines in the Guide to Written Reporting, using appropriate language, tables and graphs and referring to illustrative elements in an appropriate manner. The student will be able to refer to sources and prepare a list of sources in a largely correct way.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

In addition to the above, students will be able to apply statistical thinking to different research designs and measurement sets. The student will master the basics of statistical inference when dealing with samples of different sizes. Understand the significance of the results of regression analysis. The student will be able to perform the given tasks independently and will also take responsibility for the performance of the group. Linguistically, the text of the report is largely free of errors. The report complies with the given guidelines for written reporting.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

In addition to the above, the student will have a comprehensive understanding of the subject matter and its application to problem solving, as well as the ability to present and justify logically chosen solutions. Students are highly motivated and committed to taking responsibility for their own and the group's performance. The report is exemplary in meeting the guidelines for written reporting.
