Objectives

The student knows and understands the unit processes of paper and paper board coating and surface sizing. The student can evaluate the effects of paper and paper board coating on paper quality, costs and environment.

Content

Raw materials of paper and paper board coating: pigments, binders and additives. Formula of coating colour and rheology of coating colour. Coating kitchen operations. Coated paper and paper board products. Coating and surface sizing methods. Parameters of base paper, coating method and coating colour in coating process.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

Knowing: The student recognizes different paper and paper board coating and surface sizing processes, names raw materials of coating colour and the parts of the processes and devices, defines the most important terms, understand the factors affecting quality of coated paper.

Acting: The student manages the assigned tasks under supervision/assisted.

Being: The student can give and receive feedback, can work in a group, takes responsibility for his/her own work.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

Knowing: The student explains the unit process of paper and paper board coating and surface sizing process, The student compares the different coated and surface sized products. The student explains the formula of coating colour and the coating parameters in the coating machine.

Acting: The student is able to plan and calculate the coating colour recipe according to requirements of coated product. The student is able to coat or surface size the paper.

Being: can give and receive feedback actively and constructively, can cooperate responsibly and is ready to develop his/her interaction skills.
Recognizes and follows the important courses of action in the field.
Takes responsibility and commits to the group activities in addition to his/her own work.
