Objectives

This course provides students with the essential skills to create and animate 3D characters for video games. It covers the fundamentals of character modeling, rigging, and animation, guiding students through the process of bringing their characters to life with realistic movements. By the end of the course, participants will be proficient in developing their own animated characters, ready to be integrated into game environments.

Character Modeling: Craft detailed 3D characters tailored for games.
Rigging for Animation: Rig characters effectively, preparing them for animation with a focus on movement mechanics and constraints.
Character Animation: Animate characters, bringing them to life through motion and expression, from basic walks to complex actions.
Integrating Characters into Game Engines: Import and adjust animated characters within game engines, ensuring smooth functionality and interaction.
Optimizing Character Models: Optimize character models and animations for optimal performance in game environments.
Exporting Characters for Game Development: Finalize and export characters and animations, making them ready for integration into game projects.

Character Design and Modeling:

• Rigging Techniques:
Learning the art of rigging characters for animation, covering skeletal setup, skinning, and control rig creation to facilitate movement.
• Animation Principles: Exploring key animation principles to bring characters to life, including walk cycles, expressive facial animations, and dynamic action sequences.
• Character Integration in Game Engines: Practical steps for integrating animated characters into game engines, addressing importation, setup, and in-engine animation controls.
• Performance and Optimization: Strategies for optimizing character models and animations to ensure efficient game performance across platforms.
• Exporting and Implementation for Game Development: Guidelines for preparing and exporting characters and animations for seamless integration into game development projects.

This course aims to provide a thorough understanding and hands-on experience in creating and animating 3D characters for games. The student:
• Is able to design and model 3D characters with an understanding of anatomy and design principles
• Is able to rig and animate basic walk cycle for a character effectively, demonstrating proficiency in creating lifelike movements and expressions
• Can integrate characters into game engines, ensuring their functionality and compatibility within game environments

The student:
• Can demonstrate advanced animation techniques, including dynamic action sequences such as run, jump and attack
• Is able to efficiently optimize and export animated characters for seamless integration into game development projects, adhering to industry standards for performance and compatibility

The student:
• Is able utilize feedback and iterative processes to refine character designs and animations, demonstrating a commitment to enhancing visual quality and engagement in game environments
• Can collaborate effectively within a team setting, integrating character animations into larger game projects while adapting to feedback and project requirements
• Can research and apply emerging technologies and techniques in 3D character creation and animation, showing a proactive approach to learning and innovation in game art
