Objectives

The objective of the course is to diversly develop an understanding of tonal and free tonalmusic and its key phenomena.

Upon completing the study module, the student will be able to analyze music from the tonal and free tonal era, through personal performance, by listening and in written form and to recognize modal melodies.

Content

Melodic comprehension
• singing and writing tonal melodies containing modulations, free tonality, synthetic scales and free chord combinations
• singing and writing tonal melodies with more than one voice

Harmonic comprehension
• perceiving harmony of tonal music containing modulations from chord dictations and music examples
• getting to know free tonality

Rhythmic comprehension
• perceiving rhythms with changing time by playing and writing
• basics of polyrhytmics

Prerequisites

Solfege 2 or equivalent competence.

Assessment criteria, pass/fail

The student is able to complete the tasks fairly smoothly. Errors occur, but the performance still forms a coherent whole.

Music degree students have priority for this course. The instructor approves students for the course.
