Objectives

The objective of the course is to comprehensively develop an understanding of tonal music and its key phenomena, as well as to explore church modes.

Upon completing the study module, the student will be able to analyze music from the tonal era, through personal performance, by listening and in written form and to recognize modal melodies.

Content

Melodic comprehension
• singing and writing tonal melodies containing altered tones and chords
• singing and writing tonal melodies in two voices
• becoming familiar with church modes

Harmonic comprehension
• perceiving harmony of tonal music containing altered chords from chord dictations and music examples

Rhythmic comprehension
• perceiving basic rhythms and more complex irregularly divided rhythmic patterns by playing and writing

Prerequisites

Solfege 1 or equivalent competence.

Assessment criteria, pass/fail

The student is able to complete the tasks fairly smoothly. Errors occur, but the performance still forms a coherent whole.

Music degree students have priority for this course. The instructor approves students for the course.
