Objectives

The aim of the course is to familiarise the student with TAMK's thesis process and the key research methods used in the theses.

After completing the course, the student
- knows the thesis forms of TAMK
- knows the stages of thesis process and can apply TAMK's thesis guidelines.
- knows the research and ethical principles of implementing a thesis
- knows foundations and methods of qualitative and quantitative research
- can assess and select suitable research questions, as well as methods for data collection and information gathering for their own thesis work.
- can generate and narrow down the topic for the thesis
- can conduct a literature review while adhering to source criticism and referencing practices.

Content

TAMK's thesis formats, process stages, and principles.
Differences between qualitative and quantitative research and key data collection methods.
Information retrieval and critical use of information in the thesis.
Setting objectives and/or research questions in the thesis.
The role and implementation of a literature review in research work.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student demonstrates knowledge of the stages of TAMK's thesis process and the principles related to thesis work. However, their application to their own topic is superficial. The literature review lacks sufficient and relevant sources and proper referencing.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

The student shows familiarity with the stages of TAMK's thesis process and the principles related to thesis work. They apply research and ethical principles and methods to their own topic and define its scope. The literature review meets the given objectives and mostly adheres to the reporting guidelines.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student demonstrates a solid knowledge of the stages of TAMK's thesis process and the principles related to thesis work. They apply research and ethical principles and methods to their own topic and provide consistent and critical justifications for defining the scope of their subject. The literature review is consistent with the scope of the work and follows the reporting guidelines.
