Objectives

The course focuses on developing professional communication skills in multicultural environments in the media field.

After completing the course, the student
• communicates actively and is able to obtain information and read professional texts in English.
• is able to use professional terminology and increase their field-related vocabulary.
• distinguishes stylistic differences between spoken and written language, as well as cultural differences in professional communication.
• is able to communicate about professional topics in English.
• knows how to outline the essentials of a text and how to write analytical and structured text.

Content

Professional written communication in English, including e.g. the use of professional sources, academic writing, professional texts, documents, collecting professional vocabulary and job application process.

Spoken communication situations, e.g. small talk, pitching, negotiations, and presentation skills.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student
• is able to use English understandably in professional contexts
• is able to obtain information from appropriate sources and read basic professional texts
• knows some professional terms and phrases
• recognizes different language genres and their features satisfactorily
• knows how to outline the essentials of a text fairly well and how to write structured text

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

The student:
• is able to use English fairly well in professional contexts
• is able to obtain information from appropriate sources and is able to understand advanced professional texts
• is able to use a fairly good selection of professional terms and phrases
• recognizes different language genres and their features well
• knows how to outline the essentials of a text and is able to write analytical and well-structured text

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student
• is able to use English fluently in professional contexts
• is able to obtain information from appropriate sources and understands complex professional texts
• masters a wide range of professional terms and phrases
• recognizes a wide range of different language genres and their features
• knows how to outline the essentials of a text and is able to write texts that are excellent in content and structure
