Objectives

The aim of the course is to explore the different types of yarns and their production processes.
After completing the course, the student is able to
• define the basic terminology and classify yarn types and structures
• describe spun (short-staple and long-staple) and filament yarn production processes
• describe the properties of different spun and filament yarns
• convert yarn count systems
• evaluate sustainability and circular economy aspects related to yarns and yarn manufacturing
• use the yarn testing equipment and write a technical report

Content

Classification of yarns and yarn structures; Fibre property requirements for yarn manufacturing; Processes from fibers to threads using different production and spinning methods; Yarn count systems and the conversion between yarn counts; Quality control and testing of yarns; Recycling of fibres in yarn manufacturing

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student is able to define the most important processes, specifications and classifications related to the topic and understand the importance of yarn quality in textiles at a basic level.
The student is able to solve simple problems that are comparable to the tasks covered in the course.
The student takes responsibility for own performance.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

The student is able to explain the most important related processes, specifications and classifications related to the topic and understand the importance of yarn quality in textiles more advance level.
The student is able to apply the knowledge and perform basic and more demanding tasks.
The student takes responsibility for own performance and commits also to the activities of the group.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student has a comprehensive understanding of the most important processes and is able to evaluate the use of yarns in various applications.
The student is able to solve challenging and applied tasks. The student is able to look for different solution options and justify the choice.
