Wood StructuresLaajuus (3 cr)
Code: 5R00GR05
Credits
3 op
Objectives
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
• describe the most essential dimensioning technical aspects of conventional wooden buildings and typical properties of wooden materials compared to steel and concrete structures
• identify and name the different conventional frame systems of wooden structures and the industrial wooden element products used in small house technology
• prepare structural plans for a small house building with structural calculations and drawings with CAD assistance
• evaluate and compare the most typical conventional load-bearing wooden structures, their construction methods and their most important properties (e.g. thermal insulation, fire resistance, load-bearing capacity) and practices related to moisture management
Content
Themes related to the structural design of conventional wooden structures:
• Material properties, biological resistance of wood material, glulam, LVL, wooden boards, metal connectors and their corrosion resistance
• Service limit dimensioning, floor vibration
• Fracture limit space dimensioning, overturning
• Mechanical joints, stick joint theory, screw joints, bolt joints
• Structural systems, NR grids and building bracing
• Design principles of fire sizing, principles of carbon sizing, small house fire regulations
• Wooden construction plan documents: small house
• Industrial wood element production, small houses and log buildings
• Tools for wood structure design, dimensioning programs
Prerequisites
5R00GR02 Basics of Wood and Steel Structures
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)
The student can identify and define the different wooden structures of a small house building and their joints.
The student performs the structural design tasks of a small house building under guidance, but does not know how to justify the choices he has made.
The student knows how to give and receive feedback on a structural design assignment, evaluating the assignment from their own perspective.
Assessment criteria, good (3-4)
The student can structure and partially apply the various wooden structures of a small house building and their connections.
The student knows how to choose the most suitable from the various available structural options for a small house building, can draw up structural plans for a small house building and also knows how to justify his solution. The student can independently solve structural design questions that arise.
The student can give and receive feedback actively and constructively about the structural design task, looking at things in a multidisciplinary way.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
The student has a broad understanding of the different wooden structures of a small house building and their joints, as well as the entities formed from them.
The student knows how to look for various structural and solution options for a small house building and can draw up wooden structure plans for a small house building, creatively utilizing different solution options or even creating new ones.
The student understands the economic effects of choosing different structural solutions.
The student systematically uses the feedback to his advantage as a tool for his own professional growth.
