Description

AIMS OF THE DEGREE PROGRAMME
The Degree Programme of Construction Engineering aims to give the students the basic skills needed to work in various practical tasks in construction engineering and production as well as maintenance. In addition to technology, the education emphasises applied ICT, environmental considerations as well as the abilities for entrepreneurship and internationality. All students study the basics of project management.

STRUCTURE OF STUDIES
During the first two years of studies, the students study the basic studies, scope 103 cr. The students with a vocational school background have more mathematics and physics than the students with a matriculation exam, which explains why the number of credits is different for the basic studies. This does not, however, increase the scope of the degree. The difference is taken into account as offering more options in other studies.

During the spring of the second year of studies, the students select one of the four specialisation options. The professional specialisation studies, scope 77, give the students the opportunity to focus on a specific construction field and enable them to construct their studies in a meaningful manner. The specialisation studies are mainly studied during the last two years of studies. Each specialisation option has its own schedule. The students can complete at least 5 cr worth of specialisation studies as project studies, e.g. doing R&D projects for companies. The students may select the 15 credits worth of free-choice studies from free-choice studies, the courses offered by other specialisation studies or other from other university level studies.

The Degree Programme of Construction Engineering has the following specialisation study options:
- Building Construction
- Building Production
- Civil Engineering

Curriculum development and working life cooperation

This is a new curriculum for the Degree Program in Civil Engineering related to Tampere 3 cooperation. The curriculum has been prepared with the University of Tampere in Civil Engineering for the period 2016-2019. The competence-based curriculum has a total of 85 credits with the same learning objectives as the University of Tampere's degree in Civil Engineering.

Further information

BASIC VALUES OF CONSTRUCTION
The guidelines for the field of construction are life cycle thinking, ecology and sustainable development. Constructed environment is significant for peoples’ well-being, the economical and social development of society and the quality of living surroundings. The goals for the design, construction and maintenance of buildings are healthiness, safety, functionality and high quality. The construction business emphasises customer orientation, economic efficiency, entrepreneurship and healthy competition.

DESCRIPTION
Two thirds of our national heritage is tied to buildings or urban structures. The construction business employs directly or indirectly approximately 25% of Finland’s work force. The construction solutions affect everybody’s living and business conditions for generations to come, which means that the field is closely monitored by the public and the policies, and it is under extensive legislation.

Construction consists of house building, infrastructure i.e. civil and environmental construction as well as building use and maintenance. House building consists of the building and renovation of e.g. living, business and industrial buildings. Infrastructure construction consists of environmental technology and the building and maintenance of traffic and water supply networks, bridges, harbours etc. There has been a strong shift towards renovation and maintenance and the development seems to continue on the same track.

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS
A construction project requires seamless collaboration between the various parties involved. In many tasks, the prerequisite for coping is combining economical thinking with technical expertise. Success in the field requires customer-based operation methods and service mentality, as well as applying ICT. In addition to mathematics and science, the working life requires management, relationship, communication and negotiation skills, as well as value competence. The participation in international and multicultural projects requires strong and vast expertise, language skills as well as knowledge of different cultures and the ability to work in diverse environments.
