Objectives

The students know the basics of media history development as well as the most significant technological and cultural turning points, especially in the development of film and television. The students recognise the basic lines, genres, programme types and turning points of Finnish film and television. They are able to develop their ability to search for information and illustrative material of media history in diverse and source critical ways. The students develop their skills in argumentation, analysing and presenting observations. They are able to evaluate how the artistic and technical solutions of media history would be applicable to the media productions of today.

Content

Through lectures, examples, on-line materials and assignments, the students learn about the main lines and central critical periods of media history. The main focus is on the interaction between film and television, Finnish cinema and the digitalisation of video technology. The students independently further familiarise themselves with a theme or a topic through essays or demonstrations.
