Objectives

The students know the international characteristics, most significant turning points and most influential persons of film history. They are able to analyse films in relation to their social background as well as to recognise period specific cultural, ideological, expressional and technological elements from films. The students can distinguish different film genres. The students can evaluate how the artistic and technical solutions of film history can be applied to modern film productions.

Content

Lectures, demonstrations, seminar work introduced by the students and discussions through which the students study film history from the end of the 19th century into the present day. Political history in film. The effect of different cultures and periods on film history. The development of technology and films form in film history. Genres and their characteristics. Auteur theory.
