Objectives (course unit)

The objectives are set together with the supervising teacher. Students select a focus area related to her/his Master's thesis project within the field of emerging media. They will use open courses and other resources to acquire knowledge and skills needed in their specific focus area.

Content (course unit)

Students select an area of emerging media, which is relevant for their Master's thesis and set objectives for their learning. They actively explore online resources to explore information sources related to their focus area. They attend online courses and use online resources to acquire relevant knowledge and skills. They can also attend events/workshops that are relevant to their learning objectives. Finally, students report their independent studies and reflect on their learning with the supervising teacher. The focus areas can be one of the following:
- social media and mobile communications
- virtual or augmented reality
- applications of machine learning and artificial intelligence
- new collaborative production tools
- some other

Assessment criteria, pass/fail (course unit)

The student demonstrates independent learning, including setting learning objectives and working committedly towards achieving them. The student selects appropriate courses and/or materials and develops her/his knowledge and skills in a goal-oriented way. The student demonstrates the knowledge and skills they have acquired. The student critically reflects on her/his learning.

Location and time

January-May 2020.

Students inform their focus area before enrolling in the course (November-December). Thereafter she/he is assigned a supervising teacher with whom the learning objectives and reporting are agreed upon.
