Objectives (course unit)
After completing the course, the students will be able to:
- pronounce Finnish clearly
- understand texts that consist of frequent everyday or job-related language
- discuss topics that are of personal interest or frequent in everyday life (e.g. family, hobbies, work, housing and current events)
- understand the main points of clear standard speech on familiar matters (work, school, leisure, etc. )
- understand the main point of radio or TV programmes on current affairs when the delivery is relatively slow and clear
- write simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest
- describe experiences and events
- give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans
- express opinion, agreement or disagreement
- narrate a simple story

The student learns how to
• describe different phases and changes of their professional and personal life
• argue for their opinions
• make comparisons between people, places, and objects
• talk about their everyday life interests and activities (e.g., sports and renovation)
Students will also extend their knowledge in
• plural forms
• word types
• use of adjectives
• use of verb forms
• sentence structures

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2) (course unit)
The student has completed all the assignments acceptably and attended contact lessons at least 80 %.
The student can tell some things about everyday life in Finnish comprehensively.
They are able to tell few things related to general knowledge.
Assessment criteria, good (3-4) (course unit)
The student has an active attitude towards studying Finnish language and culture. They are showing that by completing written tasks according to the schedule. The student is able to use different kind of sentence structures and compare qualities of different objects. They can tell about family life, their own culture and talk about sports and other activities etc. They are able to write descriptions and texts like emails in Finnish and are able to pronounce Finnish clearly.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5) (course unit)
The student has a positive and active attitude towards learning Finnish and is genuinely interested in Finnish culture and brings it up by comparing Finnish culture to their own. They can pronounce Finnish intelligibly when communicating in everyday situations. Expressions used in spoken and written communication are suitable and varied and grammar almost correct.
Assessment methods and criteria
The course grade will be determined by the following exams:
- mid exam (weight 30 %)
- final exam (weight 70 %)
In addition to this, you can have course assignments that will not affect the course grade but you need to pass.
