Description
KNOW-HOW PROVIDED BY TRAINING PROGRAMME
The adult education degree programme in Forestry Engineering aims to develop the students’ professional skills, so that they could better work in the changing field of harvesting and transportation. The skills needs for these new tasks are very different from the goals of the traditional forestry engineering education.
In order to meet these new challenges, a forestry engineer needs to know:
The legislation behind forestry entrepreneurship
Basics of business
The different disciplines in forestry, their principles and machinery, as well as the basics of efficient machine use
The total chain of wood procurement, and the related business planning and implementation
Use of ICT, communication skills in guidance and advice, information acquisition, languages required by the increasing international interaction, management skills for people and various issues, marketing and project management skills (managing change, general working life skills).
WORKING LIFE PLACEMENTS
The students graduated in adult education degree programme in Forestry Engineering will be employed in small companies of wood procurement for planning and implementation of the business. In these tasks there is emphasized the diverse know-how of different work descriptions, machines, costs, personnel management, operative planning and implementation guidance.
BASIC VALUES OF THE EDUCATION
The focus of a forestry engineer’s work are forests, which offer diverse possibilities but also restrictions for economic use. The majority of Finnish forests are owned by private individuals, who – in addition to or instead of – financial value have placed other values on it as well. We would not need many forestry engineers if there were no businesses which use wood as their raw material. Because the forestry sector is an important part of national economy and because the society must ensure the benefits of the forests for future generations, the state authorities have placed goals and also restrictions for forestry. In this field, the forestry engineers work in various planning, guidance, education, marketing, management and assistant research tasks either in the service of society, forest owners or companies.
TRAINING IMPLEMENTATION
The education is implemented as a multiform teaching, where the student’s own uncompelled studying is in the main role. Contact teaching takes place in Tampere on Fridays and on Saturdays a couple of times in a month. Students will do the assignments involved with the contact teaching on their own
Adult students can use their previous experiences in the learning process. This way they can benefit from the skills of the entire group. Working life problems and their solutions improve learning various topics. Independent information acquisition done in the working life supports learning, and learning improves the skills to solve working life problems.
Students with diverse working life backgrounds are a good resource for information. At the same time, by working together in groups, the adult students learn collaboration skills, which have become increasingly important in the recent years.
KNOW-HOW PROVIDED BY TRAINING PROGRAMME DURING DIFFERENT YEARS
The students will do their own study plan. Previous know-how will be included in the degree.
During the first study year students augment their study- and communication skills and they familiarize themselves with forest machinery entrepreneurship and harvesting data systems and their use. Forest machinery technology and maintenance is included in the second year and the project studies are possible to be carried out as well.
During the second year the schedule contains Mechanised harvesting as a part of the value chain of wood procurement, Forestry English, Practical training and Bachelor’s Thesis.
