Objective of course: 
Students 
-	are familiar with the basic concepts of public health science 
-	know the major public health illnesses in Finland, their risk factors and prevention  
-	understand the meaning of individual, social and societal factors on public health and illnesses  
-	are able to work appropriately in first-aid situations 
-	are able to work in professional interaction with individuals, groups and families 
-	can complete initial interviews and the related collection of information on the overall situation of the patient  
-	are trained in the use of information technology in registration of patient care 
-	understand the nursing process as a whole  
-	know the issues related to privacy protection and status of patients  
-	know the issues related to patient integrity and self-determination 
-	have basic knowledge of patients´ needs for rest and sleep, nutrition, pain relief, excretion, hygiene and moving as well as can use the related nursing methods 
-	follow aseptic principles in nursing  
-	know the ergonomic way of working 
-	have basic knowledge on healthy nutrition 
-	know the most common diets

-	main public health diseases, health problems and their risk factors 
-	recommendations for nutrition 
-	most common diets 
-	first aid 
-	nursing documentation 
-	nursing process 
-	professional interaction 
-	definition and nursing and treatment according the patient´s basic needs 
-	nursing of long-term bedpatients 
-	nursing of dying patients 
-	aseptics 
 
Teaching methods: 
Lectures, tutorials, clinical training, seminar, study visits, assignments, interviews and small group exercices, supervised independent learning 
 
Assessment methods: 
Examinations, assignments, clinical skills tests, self-evaluation, peer review, assessment given by teacher
