Objectives

In this course you will get essential information about the implementation of radiation therapy. You will also familiarize yourself with the most common cancers and how a cancer patient is treated and supported in the different stages of the disease.

After completing the course, the student:
• is aware of the most common types of cancer and their treatment
• is aware of the episodes of the crisis and the process of coping
• is aware of the process of radiotherapy from the patient’s point of view
• knows the most common side-effects of radiotherapy, how to prevent and treat them
• knows the principles of pain management
• knows the follow-up of cancer patients and methods of comprehensive rehabilitation
• knows how to meet seriously ill and dying patients and their relatives
• is aware of the nutrition of cancer patients
• knows the Finnish Social Security System related to cancer patients

• patients with cancer and their process of coping
• patient's care path in radiotherapy
• encountering seriously ill and dying patients and their relatives
• side-effects of radiotherapy, prevention and care
• pain and pain management in cancer
• cancer patient's follow-up and rehabilitation
• nutrition of cancer patients
• social security system of cancer patients

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

• can name the most general cancers of the Finns and their treatment
• can name the episodes of crisis
• can name the phases of the patient's care path in radiotherapy
• can name side-effects of radiotherapy and how to treat them
• can name alternatives related to the supporting of cancer patients
• can describe the care and encounter with seriously ill and/or dying patients

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

• can explain how to treat the most general camcers of the Finns
• can explain the episodes of crisis
• can explain the phases of the patient's care path in radiotherapy
• can describe the side-effects of radiotherapy and can explain how to relieve and treat them
• can explain alternatives related to the supporting of cancer patients
• can explain the care and encounter with seriously ill and/or dying patients

• can widely explain how to treat the most general camcers of the Finns
• can reasonably explain the episodes of crisis
