- know the most important biochemical substance groups, their structures, most essential reactions and significance to vital functions
- can explain the key metabolic reactions as well as their significance and factors influencing them
- know basic techniques in biochemistry.

- structure and function of cells
- proteins, enzymes, carbohydrates, lipids and nucleic acids
- general features and regulation of metabolism
- biochemical laboratory methods
