Objectives

Paper chemistry
The students know the structure and chemical nature of wood fibre and understand how wood fibres behave in paper. The students learn the structure of paper and how it behaves in different circumstances. The students know the chemicals used in paper making and their effects in the process, quality of products and the environment. The students know how to solve wet end chemical problems, to work in groups and to write a report. The course develops the students’ professional skills in the paper industry.

Content

Structure and characteristics of wood fibre, binding of fibres in paper, paper structure and characteristics, how paper behaves under pressure, dimensional stability of paper, transfer of liquids, heat and electricity in paper. Operating the wet end of a paper machine, retention and drainage, depositions and their prevention, internal sizing, paper fillers, coated broke, foam prevention substances, carbon dioxide, fire prevention substances, alum, colorants and optical clarifiers in making paper.
