- 4 cr
Objectives
The students learn to understand the basic mechanical properties of materials, especially structural wood and steel. They learn to know the basics of linear elasti-city and Hooke's Law. The students can analyze different stresses and strains in beams caused by normal force, shear force, bending moment and torsion and their combinations. They can determine different geometrical properties of cross sections and their influence to stresses and strains. The students learn to unders-tand structural instability and especially buckling of straight bars.
Content
The basic concepts and rules of linear elasticity and Hooke's Law. Mechanical properties of structural wood and steel. Geometrical properties of cross sections. Analysis of stress and strain: normal force, shear force, bending moment, torsion and combinations. Instability and buckling of a column.
