Vision and values of the Degree Programme
The exploitation of the natural resources, population growth and economical development has created significant local and global environmental problems. The efforts to protect the environment and reduce these harmful impacts have become major political and industrial issue all over the world. This has created an increased demand for engineering professionals that can influence and develop the production and service processes to be more sustainable and efficient and are able to work in international, multidisciplinary and complex environments. The environment, and the skills needed to manage it, must be considered in a holistic way, recognising both the interdependence and interactions of people and how we function within the natural environment. The multidisciplinary concept of this Environmental Engineering programme has a firm grounding in the basic natural and engineering sciences, without forgetting the influence of the human factor. The Degree Programme prepares the students to use strategies and tools to integrate environmental management and engineering into all levels and types of business enterprises, industry and other organisations.
Special focus will be in the sustainable and efficient use of natural resources, especially water. The students will also have a possibility to get supportive skills in entrepreneurship, logistics, energy technology, environmental and quality management. The degree programme has a strong international dimension and the graduates of the degree programme will get competence to work in international environment.
Why Environmental Engineering?
Environmental Engineering is one of the fastest growing areas of business and industry. Markets for these products and services are international and thus there is a need for experts in this field of discipline. For example the water treatment business is currently considered to be the fastest growing market in the world. In addition traditional industry, public administration and the NGO sector need experts in planning, designing and implementing projects in the field of environmental engineering and management.
Aim of the degree programme
The overall goal of the Degree Programme is to provide students diverse work life skills and attitudes and at the same time increase the specialized professional skills and competences in the field of environmental engineering. The aim is that students achieve a high level professional knowledge to work as knowledge-based professionals or in professional management positions. Thus the degree programme fulfills the NQF Level 6 requirements.
The graduates of TAMK Environmental Engineering Degree Programme can steer the processes of industrial and public production and services in a sustainable and environmentally sound manner. They know to take into account the principles of sustainable development, material and energy efficiency, process emissions and environmental management. Environmental engineer can plan and implement the common surveys and field studies of environmental monitoring and remediation and make conclusions and suggestions for further actions.
In the specialization options the graduates will achieve advanced knowledge and skills for working in energy industry, logistics, environmental monitoring and process control as well as entrepreneurs according to the students' own interest.
The annual themes of the Degree Programme are:
1. The theme of the first-year studies is to create strong foundation to the structure and function of the environment and environmental thinking in engineering and strenghten general engineering skills of students. After completing the studies of the first study year students will have competence to work as assistants with simple, routine environmental monitoring, LCA and EIA processes when instructed and supervised.
2. The theme of the second-year studies is to strengthen both the general engineering skills and gain working skills with environmental engineering and management practises. After completing the studies on the second year students have competence to assist as supervised in environmental monitoring, environmental management projects environmental engineering industry, management and administration.
3. The theme of the third year is to deepen the environmental engineering skills and get competence in project work and practical environmental engineering tasks. After completing the studies of the third year, students have competence to work as a member of a team in environmental monitoring, environmental management projects and various jobs in environmental engineering industry, management and administration.
4. The theme of the fourth year is to advance students' competence in selected study module and prepare them to work life challenges. After completing the degree programme students have competence to monitor and report environmental quality (air, water, soil) for the industry and public administration. They have competence to work in international environment, develop industrial processes in environmental monitoring, environmental management and development in various jobs in environmental engineering industry and environmental administration.
Typical job titles are: environmental engineer, environmental planner, environmental coordinator, environmental manager, project manager, project engineer etc.
Curriculum development and working life cooperation
Curriculum has been developed in collaboration with the working life. New learning methods, especially project studies, work life skills and latest environmental technology, will be an essential part of the curriculum.
Further information
An essential part of the curriculum is to integrate the learning of general work life skills, international, innovation and ethical competences and learning skills to the studies. In order to strenghten the integration of foreign students, multilingual course implementations in advanced studies are implemented in order to develop the Finnish language skills and maintain the Finnish skills with Finnish students.
During the studies students will collect portfolio from the study modules to show the achieved competences. Portfolio is presented as a part of one selected course in a semester. In addition to the professional competences general competences are taken into account in the evaluation of studies. Ethical competences, learning skills, international and work life skills are included into the study modules and will be presented as a part of the students' portfolios.
